Taking Steps to Improve Security and Prevent Breaches

If companies were as intentional about preventing cyberattacks as cybercriminals are when they plan their hacks, there’d be fewer successful breaches. You need a detailed plan when it comes to security, but taking it in phases can make the complex scenario easier to manage.

Addressing Phase One Issues

Think like a cybercriminal for a moment as you begin mapping your security strategy. Hackers like to study their target’s website, scour through various executive bios, and look them up on social media for clues about how to plan an attack, which might include trying to break into LinkedIn or Twitter accounts first.

In phase one, make sure your employees are using good password practices. For instance, they should never use one for all their accounts. Each site should be protected with a unique password that doesn’t use family names or birthdates or anything a hacker can guess.

You need better visibility into your network infrastructure to help you find these problem areas before they’re exploited. Automation tools are available to assist in this area.

Phase Two

One of the ways hackers find success is to use a file that someone from the inside will be enticed to click on, thereby introducing malicious code into your system and allowing the hackers access to whatever they want.

Hackers are constantly coming up with different types of malware, but using a phishing scam is generally the go-to method of entry. Therefore, you need to educate everyone with access to your system about the latest threats, suspicious emails, and the fact that no file should ever be opened if it’s not from someone you know.

Gaining Control in Phase Three

It’s important to put a face to a name, which is what most companies attempt to do with their marketing efforts. Just make sure you’re not putting too much personal information out there, because it can be used by cybercriminals who find ways into your system.

Gain more control by regularly updating your software, especially security software that can leave you open for attack. With the right tools, you can detect attacks and take action before they become a catastrophic issue.
