The Changing Security Exposure in the Cloud

Cloud technology is a major disruptor in the market, with companies that choose to ignore digital transformation forced to confront the idea that they may not be in business for long if they do not adapt. While the cloud carries attractive benefits for companies that embrace it, it also adds complexities.

The cloud is valued for its ability to improve performance while offering scalability and cost-effectiveness, but it presents challenges for managing big data and analysis capabilities, as well as what might be the most significant complexity: security.

IDC estimates that by 2018, 85 percent of all enterprises will commit to a multi-cloud environment. Here are a few of the ways that a move to the cloud will shape events in the market:

Servers and security will be the biggest concerns. Obtaining enough bandwidth will be an ongoing challenge for IT departments, and determining how to access enough server space at a cost-efficient rate may require some dedicated resources. Bandwidth coverage is even more at a premium as a bring your own device (BYOD) culture dominates the landscape at most enterprises.

Network upgrades are at the center of cloud deployment because once an enterprise has a strategy for accessing cloud network capabilities, it is much easier than trying to expand their own on-site network.

Security is also complicated by the array of devices being used by employees and the platforms and applications accessed in the cloud. Enterprises no longer only have to build a wall to keep the attacks out, but must take into account that the surface of their security risk is broader and expanding all the time.

Research and Markets demonstrated in recent findings that investment in security is growing quickly as enterprises launch more cloud solutions. In fact, between now and 2021, it’s expected that security spending will grow by nearly 20 percent.

The fast adoption of cloud services and infrastructure requires a similarly aggressive approach toward adequate security features. Security is often one of the key concerns related to cloud adoption in enterprises, so it’s important that steps are taken to protect the broader security risk that cloud technology introduces.

Enterprises can talk with vendors about security responsibility and create detailed plans for ensuring they are protected, including who will take responsibility for damages if there is a security breach.
